Curriculum Overview
The John Jay Science & Engineering Academy offers students the opportunity to immerse themselves in real-world, hands-on, STEM-focused curriculum. SEA鈥檚 goal is to help its students explore their STEM interest, discover their passions, and graduate innovators and leaders in society.
Students at the Science & Engineering Academy choose one of the following 4 programs of study: , , (Computer Science), and .
In each program of study, students will participate in unique courses that they can only get here at the Science & Engineering Academy. In each course, students will participate in Academic Research where they will choose a topic to research, develop a product or presentation, and receive feedback from an expert in the field. All students will participate in a 2 period Practicum their Senior year where they will get to work with professionals in the field to problem-solve real life scenarios.
Along with a deep dive into a program of study, SEA offers nearly 80 outside of the classroom STEM experiences each year. These experiences range from guest speakers and visiting Engineering firms to participating in the Architecture, Construction, and Engineering Mentorship and organizing and hosting a student-led STEAMFest for families in the community. Oftentimes, these experiences occur during the school day and free of charge to eliminate barriers and encourage all students to participate.
In addition to these unique STEM experiences, SEA students are a part of the John Jay Mustang Family and participate in all campus clubs and organizations including UIL sports, Academics, and Fine arts. Oftentimes SEA students hold leadership positions in campus clubs and organizations, all while preparing for a future in the STEM industry.
The John Jay Science & Engineering Academy is designed to ensure that SEA students graduate ready to continue their STEM education at some of the most prestigious colleges and universities. Students take Advanced AP and Dual Credit courses throughout their high school career that teach them college readiness skills and earn them college credit. Recent graduates were accepted to MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Rice University, Texas A&M, University of Texas at Austin, US Naval Academy, US Air Force Academy, and the US Merchant Marine Academy just to name a few. Each year, our graduating class completes hundreds of college credits and is awarded millions of dollars in scholarships.
